La finale della 20km di marcia donne vede purtroppo svanire una delle nostre speranze, Elisa Rigaudo (ITA), che non taglia il traguardo. Vittoria qui per Olga Kaniskina (RUS) in 1:30:09, seconda Tatyana Shemyakina (RUS) in 1:30:42 e terza María Vasco (ESP) a 1:30:47.

Le due semifinali dei 1500m donne terminano la prima con la vittoria di Maryam Yusuf Jamal (BRN) in 4:14.86 con le altre quattro qualificate nello spazio di mezzo secondo, e la seconda, molto più veloce, con quella di Iryna Lishchynska (UKR) in 4:03.84 su Yelena Soboleva (RUS) a 4:03.87 e Viola Kibiwot (KEN) a 4:03.97. Le semifinali degli 800m uomini hanno premiato Yuriy Borzakovskiy (RUS) con 1'45"12, Gary Reed (CAN) 1:44.92 e Alfred Kirwa Yego (KEN) 1:44.54. Dentro anche Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (RSA) 1:44.71 e Wilfred Bungei (KEN) 1:45.20.
Nella finale del giavellotto donne Barbora Špotáková (CZE) batte Christina Obergföll (GER) lanciando a 67.07m e stabilendo il primato nazionale contro il 66.46m della tedesca.
Finale dei 400m uomini, tutti gli occhi puntati su Jeremy Wariner (USA) che non delude per la vittoria né per il maestoso tempo di 43.45 (PB), ma lascia l'amaro in bocca per quel record che tutti si aspettavano potesse cadere. Certo parliamo di una prestazione incredibile che ha comunque dato al pubblico uno spettacolo memorabile. Quindi dietro di lui LaShawn Merritt (USA) che prende un argento 'soltanto' con 43.96 e bronzo per il campione olimpico dei 400hs Angelo Taylor con 44.32.
La staffetta non riesce a scrollarsi di dosso la progressione negativa che, solo per limitarci alle utlime tre grandi manifestazioni (Helsinki 2005, Goteborg 2006 ed Osaka 2007), sembra caratterizzarla. La formazione, pare decisa all'ultimo, è composta da Rosario La Mastra, Simone Collio, Maurizio Checcucci e Jacques Riparelli. Il tempo finale 38.81, la posizione di arrivo 4°, nella classifica generale sono 10°: fuori dalla finale. Peccato perchè si trattava anche della semifinale più abbordabile. Ma non si giunga troppo presto a conclusioni errate: i ragazzi hanno dato il massimo, le cause del flop, a mio modesto avviso, sono da imputare ad altro... Trovo giusto evidenziare anche le grandi prestazioni di Jamaica (Dwight Thomas, Steve Mullings, Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell) 38.02, Brasile (Vicente de Lima, Rafael Ribeiro, Basílio de Moraes, Sandro Viana) 38.27, Stati Uniti (Rodney Martin, Wallace Spearmon, Darvis Patton, Leroy Dixon) 8.10 e l'incredibile Giappone (Naoki Tsukahara, Shingo Suetsugu, Shinji Takahira, Nobuharu Asahara) 38.21.

propongo una petizione per modificare ldistanze e altezze degli ostacoli, date di nascita degli atleti, numero di corsie della pista, peso degli attrezzi, lunghezza delle pedane, numeri di scarpe dei giudici, ...e qualunque altra cifra numerica possa ripetere ossessivamente MONETTI!!! almeno sentiremo qualcosa di nuovo dal suo microfono!!!

mi dispiace per i ragazzi della staffetta, la finale era a un tiro di schioppo, ma mi chiedo: dato che presi uno per uno i nostri velocisti sono tutti bravi ma non da record del mondo, decidendo la formazione all'ultimo non si rischia di perdere tempo per impossibilità di fluidità nei cambi? o la tecnica è come quella dei campionati provinciali "prendi dieci piedi e metti un pezzo di scotch"... boh!
